오늘은 2028 대입제도 개편안에서 예고된 내신 성적 산출 방식의 변화가 우리 교육 현장에
어떤 영향을 미칠지 살펴보고자 합니다.
먼저 개편안의 주요 내용을 간단히 정리해 보겠습니다.
고1부터 고3까지 모든 학년에 절대평가가 도입되고, 기존의 9등급 상대평가는 5등급제로 바뀝니다.
상대평가와 절대평가가 함께 표기되는 방식이죠.
자, 그럼 이런 변화가 가져올 파장을 하나씩 짚어볼까요?
우선 상대평가 등급을 5단계로 줄이면 1, 2등급을 받는 학생 비율이 크게 늘어납니다.
사실상 한 학교의 절반 가까운 학생이 1, 2등급에 몰리게 되는 거죠.
좋은 성적을 받는 학생이 많아지는 건 좋은 일 같지만, 이렇게 되면 오히려 학생들의 학업 능력을 변별하기가
어려워집니다.
대학 입시에서 내신 성적이 큰 역할을 하려면 학생들 간의 차이를 잘 드러내 줄 수 있어야 하는데 말이죠.
여기에 절대평가를 병행하면 어떻게 될까요?
대부분의 학교에서는 학생들의 성적을 끌어올리기 위해 시험 문제를 쉽게 출제할 가능성이 높습니다.
많은 학생이 좋은 점수를 받을 수 있도록 말이죠. 그렇게 되면 대부분의 학생이 A나 B를 받게 되고,
절대평가 역시 변별력을 잃게 됩니다. 결국 내신 성적이 대입에서 반영될 때 공정성 시비를 피하기 어려워집니다.
이번 개편안의 이면에는 사실상 내신 성적을 대입 전형 자료로서 형식적으로만 활용하려는 의도가
깔려있다고 봅니다. 절대평가와 5등급제를 통해 내신의 영향력을 약화시키려는 것이죠.
이는 기존의 고교 서열 구조를 유지하려는 정책적 방향과도 맞물려 있습니다.
이미 정부는 자사고와 특목고 존치를 결정했죠. 이런 상황에서 명문고의 입지를 강화하려면
오히려 내신 경쟁을 완화해야 합니다. 우수한 학생들이 내신 때문에 명문고 진학을 꺼리는 상황을 막아야 하니까요.
그런데 말입니다. 이렇게 내신 성적을 희석시켜 버리면, 그동안 학교생활에 충실했던 학생들의 노력은
어떻게 보상받을 수 있을까요? 수능 못지않게 내신이 학생 선발의 주요 기준이 돼왔던 것은 단순히 학력만이 아니라
성실성과 꾸준함 같은 가치를 중시했기 때문입니다.
물론 학교별 학력 격차라는 문제가 있어서 내신만으로 선발하는 건 어렵습니다.
하지만 그래도 어느 정도 내신의 위상은 지켜줘야 하지 않을까요?
예를 들어 전체 모집 인원의 20% 정도는 의무적으로 내신 성적 우선으로 뽑는 방안도 고려해 볼 만합니다.
학교생활을 열심히 한 학생들에게 희망을 줄 수 있을 테니까요.
저는 무엇보다 고교 교육의 정상화가 중요하다고 봅니다.
수능과 내신 성적의 영향력을 줄이는 대신 학생부 종합전형을 확대하겠다는 정부 방침이 과연 고교 교육의 건강성을
담보할 수 있을지 걱정이 됩니다.
좋은 대입제도란 단순히 선발의 공정성만 따지는 게 아니라, 우리 아이들이 고등학교에서 보내는 소중한 시간들을
얼마나 의미 있고 행복하게 보낼 수 있게 하느냐에 달려 있습니다.
성적 향상과 입시 경쟁에만 매몰되지 않고, 다양한 꿈을 살리고 미래역량을 기를 수 있는 교육.
내신 성적 개편이 그런 방향과 어긋나지 않기를 간절히 바랍니다.
